At present, whether blood glucose meets the target is mainly judged by two indicators:Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c) and Time in Range (TIR).
Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c)
For most adult patients with type 2 diabetes:
Target HbA1c < 7.0%.
For patients with type 2 diabetes who are young, have a short disease duration, long life expectancy, no complications, and no cardiovascular disease:
HbA1c < 6.5% or even close to normal is recommended.
For patients over 80 years old, with short life expectancy, poor general health, or severe complications:
Target HbA1c < 8.0%.
Blood glucose targets may be relaxed appropriately, but acute hyperglycemia symptoms and related complications should be avoided.
Time in Range (TIR)
For most patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes:
Time in glucose target range (3.9–10.0 mmol/L): > 70%
Time above range (glucose > 10.0 mmol/L): < 25%
Time below range (glucose < 3.9 mmol/L): < 4%
These data can be obtained through Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM).
