Global toy manufacturer Mattel has introduced its first-ever Type 1 Diabetes Barbie doll, designed to help children living with the condition build confidence and feel seen, while fostering empathy among other kids.
The doll features a pink glucose monitor on her arm, an insulin pump attached at her waist, a smartphone with a blood sugar tracking app, and an outfit decorated with blue polka dots — a tribute to the blue circle, the universal symbol for diabetes awareness.
This Barbie “lives with” Type 1 Diabetes, an autoimmune disorder most often diagnosed in childhood. Since patients must check blood glucose daily and take insulin injections, the doll wears a glucose monitor on one arm and an insulin pump around her waist.
The launch follows Mattel’s long-running Fashionistas line of diverse dolls, which includes more than 175 representations such as wheelchairs and visual impairment, aiming to break stereotypes. British model Lila Moss, a 22-year-old public figure living with Type 1 Diabetes who openly wears medical devices, inspired a UK-exclusive version. She shared pride in the release, noting it helps young patients feel less anxious and proud of who they are.
