Diabetic foot is a complication in diabetic patients characterized by foot infection, ulceration, and destruction of deep tissues caused by distal lower extremity neuropathy and vascular disease. It is managed in departments including Vascular Surgery and Endocrinology.
The disease results from sensory loss due to neuropathy combined with mechanical stress leading to ulceration, and vascular disease impairing tissue healing.Clinical manifestations include:
Neuropathic symptoms: dry skin, stocking‑pattern sensory abnormalities
Ischemic symptoms: intermittent claudication, rest pain
Gangrene may occur in severe cases.
Diagnosis is based on:
10‑g monofilament examination
Ankle‑brachial index (ABI) measurement
Vascular imaging
Among these:
CT angiography (CTA) is the preferred imaging modality for patients with normal renal function.
Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) remains the gold standard for diagnosis.
